If you’re following along with our instructions from How to Start a Blog in 5 Easy Steps then congratulations, you’ve reached step 5. You’re ready to write and publish your first post and start blogging with WordPress.
Before publishing your first post, here’s how to create a static Home page & a Blog page
WordPress will initially display your blog posts on your home page. WordPress started as a blogging platform so the assumption is that you are creating a blog, but if you are a business and your blog is not the centerpiece of your marketing, then you will want a static homepage with a separate blog page to display your posts. If you want your home page to display your posts, you can skip this step.

Publish your first two pages Home & Blog
Begin by going to Pages → Add New → Enter the title Home → Publish the Page.
Repeat these steps to create a page called Blog.
Now you need to tell WordPress how to use these pages —
- Go to Appearance → Customize → Static Front Page
To make your front page static, choose “A static page” and set the Front page to the page you just created called “Home”.
- Set your Posts page to Blog
- Save changes to update your settings
- Click the x to close Customize
Now your blog posts will display on a blog page in reverse chronological order. Often bloggers choose to show a blog excerpt with a read more link to the full post. The WordPress theme you selected may have options available for a blog summary display.
And now, the moment you’ve been waiting for…..
How to Publish your First Post
Let’s create a new blog post and publish it. Don’t get confused here, you don’t edit the page you created called Blog. The page will display your posts but you write each post independently of the page. Begin by selecting Posts in the left-hand navigation menu.
You may notice that WordPress has already published a post for you called “Hello World.” You can send it to trash.
Under Posts click on Add New.
- Give your post a Title
- Add your post content
- Upload a photo to include in the post by clicking the Add Media button
Notice the important post publishing panels on the right-hand side of the Post dashboard. You can toggle these panels open and closed by clicking the arrows. Different themes and plugins will give you different panel options.
Here you will:
- Schedule your post to go live at a later date or Publish your post right away
- Assign a Category other than Uncategorized to your Post
- Set the image as your Featured Image to display with a blog excerpt on the Blog page
- You may like to review this post before you click publish and then when you’re ready, go ahead and click the Publish button!
Congratulations — you’ve just published your first post! You now belong to the worldwide community of bloggers.
