What to Do When You’ve Lost Your WordPress Password

Did you know that there are several way to reset your WordPress password when you’ve lost it?

The most common way is by using the “Forgot Password” link.

But if you are unsuccessful recovering your password this way, there are other methods too.

Before we get started, here’s a tip so you won’t need to reset your password… We recommend that you use a password manager such as LastPass. LastPass is a password manager that securely stores all your login credentials and sensitive information in one place, allowing you to easily access them across multiple devices. It also generates strong and unique passwords for each account, increasing your online security.

There are several ways to reset your password. Some are simple and others are more complicated. Use the more advanced methods only if you feel comfortable and confident with code.

Methods to Reset Your Password

  1. Login Through Your Web Host
  2. Using the WordPress Forgot password Link for Email Password Recovery
  3. Requesting to Another Admin User to Change Your Password from the WordPress Dashboard

Login To WordPress Through Your Web Host

Web hosts such as SiteGround provide a link to your WordPress Admin from the hosting client area. This provides the easiest method for reseting your password. First login to your web hosting account, then click to open the WordPress Admin. Now in your WordPress Admin area you can reset your password from your user profile following these steps.

  1. In the WordPress Dashboard click on Users
  2. Select All Users
  3. Below your username click Edit
  4. Scroll down to the Account Management area and click the Set New Password Button
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and Update User

Reset Using the WordPress Forgot Password Link

This is the most common way to reset your forgotten password. To reset it:

  1. Go to your login page (example.com/wp-admin)
  2. Click on the “Lost your password?” link
  3. Enter your username or email address
  4. Click on the “Get New Password” button (you’ll receive an email with a reset link)
  5. Click the link and enter your new password twice
  6. Click on the “Reset Password” button to save your new password

If you don’t have access to that email address, or your WordPress site fails to send an email, then you will not be able to reset your password using this method.

Request Another WP Administrator to Reset Your Password

If your website has more than one administrator, you can ask them to change your password. This way you have a backup/support system should one of you not be able to get into or work on the site.

Here’s how another Admin can reset your password:

  1. In the WordPress Dashboard click on Users
  2. Select All Users
  3. Below the username click Edit
  4. Scroll down to the Account Management area and click the Set New Password Button
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and Update User
  6. Then they can email you the new password
  7. You can now login and follow these steps to change this password to one that only you know.

So … it is possible to reset your password

Don’t panic if you’ve lost your password and you need to reset it. As you have learned, there are a few ways for you to access your website without too much difficulty.
