Registering your domain name

Registering your domain name

Before you begin your WordPress Website journey, you’ll have to register a domain name. A domain name is a unique address that can be used on the Internet. It’s what you see in the address bar after the “www.” in your web browser and it’s what comes after the @ sign in an email address.

Select a domain that is short and brandable. You may like to include a keyword (a term that people would use to find you, your company, your services or your blog). You may find these 4 Tips for Choosing a Domain Name helpful.

You can choose any domain registrar you like.  Some web hosts will include one free year when you register your domain with them. We prefer to keep domain and hosting registrations separated.

Our recommendation for a domain registrar

We like Namespro for domain registration. They’re Canadian and they offer one of the least expensive reputable registration services. They also offer email hosting which may be important depending on who you select as your web host. You’ll get one email address free per domain name.

Once you’ve selected a name, go to Namespro to check for its availability.  When you find what is available, decide whether you want the .ca, .com or both.  Add your selections to your shopping cart.

When checking out, you’ll be asked to create an account or to log in, if you have an existing account. Fill in your details and record the account information for your own records.

Just leave the domain as parked for now until you have signed up for hosting.

And that’s it, you’ve registered your domain name.

Private WHOIS

When you register a domain name, your contact information is required to complete the registration. What you probably don’t realize is that all the information you provide becomes available to the public through the registries’ WHOIS databases once the domain is registered. The availability of these databases not only jeopardize the privacy of your contact information, they also tend to attract spammers and other web users with malicious intention.

We recommend that you purchase a Private WHOIS to keep your private information from being made public.
